Fort Lewis College is the place for Adventure Education. We’re home to a network of adventure educators. With this one-of-a kind Bachelor of Arts degree, you prepare to teach and lead others in outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing, backpacking and river paddling.
This new program begins in 2007. It zeros in on giving you the foundation to help others learn about the environment, develop trust, confidence, teamwork, problem solving and communication skills. You’ll prepare for jobs as an environmental educator, wilderness instructor or outdoor youth counselor.
Adventure Education, as a profession and an academic major, is rewarding, but demanding.
To qualify, you must meet the program’s admission requirements and maintain a grade point average. It requires serious commitment of time, energy, scholarship and professionalism.
You learn outdoor technical and safety skills. You gain the scientific, cultural and literary knowledge required of an adventure educator. You immerse yourself in a block of courses that includes extended mountain and desert backpacking trips or river expeditions, combined with full-day classes throughout the semester.
You can also study and experience adventure education in a foreign country, or by taking an Outward Bound or NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course. And with the college’s co-curricular Outdoor Pursuits program, you gain added experience practicing what you learn in your Adventure Education courses.
What better place to learn Adventure Education than where the desert meets the mountains. We’re surrounded by two million acres of national forest. And the Animas River gently flows through our community.
