Art

Art is one of the most popular majors on the Fort Lewis College campus. That's because our quality art program offers the facility, faculty and artist community you won't find anywhere else.

Art Hall features unique clerestory windows that flood studios and classrooms with natural light. With a spacious 26,250 square feet, Art Hall is the newest facility on a Colorado campus. At the center is our Fort Lewis College Art Gallery. The Gallery brings local, regional and national exhibits to campus, providing students and classes with an important research tool.

Our professors, both studio artists and art historians, will work one-on-one to increase your awareness and understanding of art and its relationship to society within a broad liberal arts background.

Durango is a thriving artist community. More than 15 galleries, attracting a high-end clientele, grace its historical downtown. People not only study art here, but practice it as well.

Besides a general Art degree, Fort Lewis College offers these specialized programs:

Graphic Design - In this hands-on program, you'll learn to bring together a broad range of information into compelling, informative and persuasive communication. This program will prepare you for a career in a wide range of fields, from print to web to multimedia design.

Business Art - You can combine your studio art and art history training with business knowledge. You'll study the business side of being an artist and prepare for graduate programs in art administration as well as careers in galleries and nonprofit art groups.

Art History Minor - This minor provides a rich and unique understanding of social and cultural movements through the lens of art. You'll prepare for graduate work in art and art history. This minor provides important background for art-related fields such as museum studies, architecture, advertising and art marketing.

Art K-12 Teaching - You'll prepare to teach art. You'll learn a broad scope of art skills and techniques as well as art teaching methods and concepts. You'll complete the program along with our Teacher Education Licensure Program.
