Communications

At Fort Lewis College, you'll find communications in the heart of our English Department. We've created our program in a way that other traditional journalism schools are following our lead.

Rather than solely skills-based classes, we give you a broad base of knowledge and theory. Becoming familiar with history, economics and political science, for example, will help you understand the context in which current events unfold.

The Communications Department features a Digital Media Lab where students receive training and experience in using multimedia communications. Students produce digital films and interactive media in a lab that's equipped with digital media software, high definition video equipment, editing suites and production studios.

The more you develop your ability to think critically about a variety of issues; the more you'll be able to use that ability in a communications career. Consider these ways to practice and apply your communication skills and knowledge:

  • Write, edit and design for the campus newspaper, the Independent.
  • Practice photojournalism at the Independent.
  • Intern at several local newspapers
  • Write and announce on-the air for the campus radio and intern at local radio stations.
  • Enter regional and feature films in the Durango Film Festival, an international film venue.
  • Create videos to be broadcasted on the Durango Community Access Television, a local channel.
  • Work in public relations, advertising, video production in communications internships.
  • Write, layout and design for the campus magazine, Images.
