Early Childhood Education

A license in Early Childhood Education allows you to teach young children in preschool through third grade. It's where learning begins.

Students who are interested in earning an Early Childhood Education teaching license choose the Interdisciplinary Studies Major (ISM). You can also combine an Early Childhood Education licensure with an Elementary Education licensure.

The ISM will prepare you to teach all the subject areas for elementary or early childhood ? literacy, math, science and social studies. It's rich in classes such as Math for Elementary teachers, Life Span Development, Children's Literature and a menu of choices in the sciences.

Fort Lewis College offers its own learning lab on campus. The Campbell Child and Family Center, a child development center for toddlers and preschoolers, is our newest campus facility. This14,400-square-foot center serves nearly 45 children. Observation areas allow college students and others to observe children through two-way mirrors.

We'll also prepare you to teach children from various cultural backgrounds and a multitude of learning styles. You'll work with our team of instructors, all of whom have teaching experience at the preschool, elementary or secondary levels.

By the time you graduate, you'll be confident in the classroom and have strong teaching abilities. You'll be able to give young children the building blocks they need for success throughout their lives.

Durango is a great location. Child care centers in Southwest Colorado serve more than a 1,000 toddlers and preschoolers.
