Many students want to study economics. At Fort Lewis College, they do so by working with the college's Office of Economic Analysis and Business Research.
You get hands-on experience in collecting and analyzing economic data in the local community. With these projects, you'll learn how economic theory applies in the real world. You'll also provide a community service, determining the economic impact of organizations and events in the local economy.
Examples of students' economic research projects include the Economic Impact of Child Care in La Plata County, the Economic Impact of the Durango Independent Film Festival and the Economic Impact of the Mancos Mush Dog Sled Races, Mancos Balloon Festival and Renaissance Faire. A student is currently working on a study for the La Plata County Humane Society.
Economics is for the student who is interested in public policy or law school; and it's for those who want to use their degree in a broader context than in a business firm. Students are analytical and interested in social and political issues from an economist's point of view.
So what comes after the degree? Studies show that students who graduate with an economics degree earn a higher average score on the law school entrance exam than graduates of other degrees.
