Elementary Education

Students who are interested in earning an Elementary Education teaching license choose the Interdisciplinary Studies Major (ISM). Some students combine their Elementary Education licensure with an Early Childhood Education licensure.

The ISM will prepare you to teach all the subject areas for elementary or early childhood ? literacy, math, science and social studies. It's rich in classes such as Math for Elementary teachers, Life Span Development, Children's Literature and a menu of choices in the sciences.

Fort Lewis College offers its own learning lab on campus. The Campbell Child and Family Center, a child development center for toddlers and preschoolers, is our newest campus facility. This14,400-square-foot center serves nearly 45 children. Observation areas allow college students to observe children through two-way mirrors.

We'll also prepare you to teach children from various cultural backgrounds and a multitude of learning styles. You'll work with our team of instructors, all of whom have teaching experience at the preschool, elementary or secondary levels. Student teaching is the highlight of our program. You can choose to student teach in Durango, other Colorado communities and even in other states. We will work with you to help you find the student teaching situation that best serves your needs.

Our annual Teacher Education Career Fair attracts school districts from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, among other areas. They value and hire our graduates. According to our survey results, every graduate who sought teaching employment has found a position.
