Exercise Science

What can you do with an Exercise Science major? Ask Jim Keller.

Jim graduated in 1990 with an Exercise Science degree from Fort Lewis College. He served as assistant athletic trainer for the Denver Broncos for nearly 10 years and was part of two Super Bowl championship teams.

Recently, he started a new business in Denver called Next Level Sport Performance, offering athletic training services to a wide variety of competitors and sports enthusiasts.

Jim is not alone. Many Exercise Science graduates are successful. For the past five years, nearly all of our graduates are working in the field or attending graduate school.

At Fort Lewis College, you'll begin your clinical experience earlier in your academic career than students who attend other universities. To help you prepare, our Human Performance Laboratory uses equipment you'll find in the profession.

As a senior, you'll present your research project, addressing problems and issues. Examples of student research includes "Comparisons of Heart Rate Response", "Correlation between Antioxidant Levels and Stress Levels", "Reliability of Baseline Concussion Exams", "The Effects of Rock Climbing on Ankle Strength, Stability, and Flexibility", among many others student research projects.

In earning your Exercise Science degree, you can choose one of the following areas in which to focus:

Athletic Training

You can earn a degree in Athletic Training. It's a competitive program in which you need to apply and interview. But you'll find the rigors of the coursework well worth the effort.

The Board of Certification will certify you as an athletic trainer after you complete the program and pass a National Comprehensive Exam. They certify only graduates from programs like ours, which are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. Find out more about this program.

Exercise Specialist

This provides the groundwork for those who plan to pursue personal training, physical therapy or graduate study in Exercise Science. The job demand for people with this option is huge.

K-12 Physical Education Teaching

Want to teach physical education in the public school system? This major works closely with the Teacher Education Department.

Sport Administration

You can study the business and administrative aspects of sports and recreation. You'll partner with the School of Business to earn your degree. After admissions into this competitive program, you can work as an intern for various sports organizations.

Coaching

You can earn a minor in Coaching by taking Exercise Science courses, officiating and completing a coaching internship.
