The Fort Lewis College Geosciences department is ideally located for studying your natural surroundings. The college is built on an ancient river terrace above the Animas Valley at the foot of the magnificent San Juan and La Plata Mountains. The gas-rich San Juan Basin lies directly to the south, the colorful canyonlands of the Four Corners region are to the west, and the Southern Rocky Mountains and Rio Grande Rift are to the east. If you want an academically strong, field-based education in the geosciences, Fort Lewis is an excellent place for you!
Our enthusiastic professors bring a wide range of research and experience to the classroom. Faculty take advantage of our fantastic surroundings by incorporating field trips into every course. Geology students at Fort Lewis study in small class sizes and work closely with faculty in the field and in our laboratory facilities. Every geology major conducts original field work and completes a senior thesis under the guidance of a faculty advisor. This research experience combined with a challenging array of coursework provides you with a unique and powerful undergraduate degree that prepares you for a variety of careers or graduate programs available in the geosciences.Â
