Geographic Information System

At Fort Lewis, you can earn a certificate in Geographic Information Systems. And why not? The career opportunities are huge, especially if you enjoy working outdoors and with professionals who are excited about the emerging and evolving GIS industry.

Our GIS program brings together the theory and the practical aspects of analyzing how things relate to one another. You’ll start with learning basic mapping concepts. Lab assignments will focus on map skills and interpretation, the use of Global Positioning Systems and using GIS software.

Students who have earned GIS certificates have majored in the following areas: environmental biology, geology, archaeology, agriculture, engineering, computer sciences, business administration and geography.

Here are a few ways GIS explores a variety of issues and problems:

• Identify voting patterns
• Assist with search and rescue in the backcountry
• Evaluate land use and real estate development
• Assess parking on campus
• Create general reference maps
• Determine hiking elevations
• Study pesticide use
• Track crime
