History

Why study history at Fort Lewis? Three reasons -- the resources, the learning opportunities and the location.

The opportunities to study abroad are another reason. The History Department offers an Innovative Month -- a program that offers focused and in-depth study by traveling to a region and immersing yourself in a culture. Last summer, students traveled to a medieval monastery and manor in Southern France. They uncovered artifacts, studied monastic customs, architecture, and learned about the realities that made the lives and works of monks and nuns a valued part of medieval society.

Durango is a third reason. The community thrives on its history. The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge -- an historical train that winds through our San Juan Mountains -- attracts thousands of visitors. The historical downtown and Victorian homes, nearby Mesa Verde are all part of Southwest Colorado.

In earning a history degree, you'll read all forms of critical and narrative writings. You'll gain a sense of your own cultural roots, and the cultural diversity of our common past. Our small classes, quality faculty, hands-on learning and liberal arts focus make our school first rate.

You can focus your History degree with an emphasis in the following:

European - Choose courses on the Soviet Union, Ancient Rome and Germany, among others.

United States - Examples of upper level classes include the Revolution, Civil War and Colorado History.
