With an Interdisciplinary Studies major (ISM), you can become licensed to teach Elementary or Early Childhood students.
With ISM, you'll prepare to teach in all subject areas for elementary and early education -- literacy, math, science and social studies. The curriculum will also prepare you to teach children of various cultural backgrounds and those with special needs.
Fort Lewis is an excellent place to prepare for teaching. We were the first in the nation to be accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council. In 2005, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education awarded our program 10 commendations for various aspects of our curriculum.
Our annual Teacher Education Career Fair attracts school districts from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, among other areas. These school districts value and hire our graduates. Besides Durango, the need for teachers in other areas of Colorado and in other states continues to grow. According to survey results, every graduate who sought teaching employment has found a position.
We also feature our own learning lab on campus. The Campbell Child and Family Center, a child development center for toddlers and preschoolers, is our newest campus building. This14,400-square-foot center serves nearly 45 children. Observation areas allow college students and others to observe children through two-way mirrors.
Durango is the best place to learn early and elementary education. The community is a major supporter of the local school district, approving a bond issue that recently expanded every school in the district.
