At Fort Lewis College, you can study the mountains. This is the first and only Mountain Studies academic program offered at a leading liberal arts college in the United States.
To offer this minor, we partnered with the Mountain Studies Institute in Silverton -- an independent research and education group. Their purpose is to enhance understanding and sustainable use of the San Juan Mountains.
Mountain Studies explores the mountains and its role in human mythology, history, culture, and the social and natural sciences. Coursework includes biology, history, anthropology, geosciences, among other subjects. Your program of study includes getting you into the mountains with Outdoor Pursuits, a campus organization designed to introduce students to outdoor activities in the Four Corners region.
You wrap it up with a Senior Seminar project that shows what you've learned in your field studies, coursework, labs and internships. In the past, students taking Mountain Studies have completed projects and internships with organizations such as the Colorado and Federal Park Service, US Forest Service, Mountain Studies Institute, the Colorado Environmental Association, Durango Nature Studies, the San Juan Citizens Alliance, Trails 2000 and Colorado Fourteeners Association.
