Physical Education K-12 Teaching

You can become a Colorado licensed K-12 Physical Education teacher (grades K-12) by choosing Exercise Science – K-12 Teaching option as your major.  You will then work to meet requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Licensure Program.

Students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in any major can seek the same licensure by entering our Post-baccalaureate licensure program.  We strongly suggest that post-bac students have their undergraduate transcripts evaluated prior to applying to Fort Lewis College so they are fully aware of the courses they will need to take to complete the post-bac curriculum.  If interested, send an email to the Director of Teacher Education who will respond with directions on how to obtain the transcript evaluation.

The Physical Education K-12 Teaching link above will lead you to the curricula for both the undergraduate Exercise Science major/Physical Education licensure program and the post-bac program, as well as the requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Licensure program.

Our K-12 Physical Education licensure program combines the strength of our exercise science and education courses that will fully prepare you to teach science to Elementary, Middle and High School students.  Fort Lewis College provides you the opportunity to study in small classes and work with professors who are eager to give you one-on-one attention. There are no graduate assistants teaching undergraduates at Fort Lewis College.  Significantly, you will practice teaching what you are learning in area schools under the direction of veteran teachers.

What better way to make a living than as a Physical Education teacher. As a physical education teacher, you will enhance children's physical abilities, assess their motor and social skills, and coach in a safe, supportive setting.  You will instill in young children the skills and knowledge that will sustain their active lifestyle. You will influence today’s adolescents to maintain, or in some cases help them initiate, such activity.

We'll be working with you all the way to obtain your Colorado license and prepare you for a Music teaching position. Click here to go to the Teacher Education web site or ask our faculty about our teacher education program.
