Students are learning Spanish in record numbers. It's now the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Learning Spanish is the passport in exchanging ideas with more people.
That's why we need good Spanish teachers. To become one, you focus on earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. You'll find expert professors in our Modern Language Department. They'll teach you the language, the culture and Spanish literature.
You'll even study abroad. Our International Programs Office will help you find a partner school in a Spanish-speaking country. Mexico and Costa Rica are just a few of the places you could consider. Immersing yourself in the Spanish language and culture is a powerful experience, expanding your studies beyond our own borders.
Our Teacher Education Department will also give you hands-on field experience to prepare you to teach. You can also tutor and mentor with community educational nonprofits such as Durango Latino Educational Coalition.
Don't hesitate. Schedule a meeting with the director of Teacher Education as early as possible. By the time you graduate, you'll have the skill, the confidence and the license to teach Middle and High School students.
Then you can take part in our annual Teacher Education Career Fair. We attract school districts from Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, among other areas. They hire our graduates, and the alumni who return our survey all say they are currently employed.
Fort Lewis in Durango is an excellent place to learn. Our local high school requires two years of foreign language before graduation, and three Durango elementary schools offer Spanish classes. In the nearby community of Bayfield, students take Spanish from K-12 grade.
