You can become a Colorado licensed secondary science teacher (grades 7-12) by choosing the teaching option within one of four majors:  Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Geoscience.   You will then work to meet requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Licensure Program. The Secondary Science Teaching link above will lead you to view the curriculum for your major of choice and the requirements for admission to the program.
Students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree can seek the same licensure by entering our Post-baccalaureate licensure program. We strongly suggest that post-bac students have their undergraduate transcripts evaluated prior to applying to Fort Lewis College so they are fully aware of the courses they will need to take to complete the post-bac curriculum.  If interested, send an email to the Director of Teacher Education who will respond with directions on how to obtain the transcript evaluation.
Our Secondary Science licensure program combines the strength of our science and education courses that will fully prepare you to teach science to Middle and High School students. Â You'll practice what you are learning in area schools under the direction of veteran teachers. In Durango, you can also tutor, mentor and even be a science fair judge for local educational organizations such as Durango Nature Studies, Study Buddies and Durango Discovery Museum.
Fort Lewis College provides you the opportunity to study in small classes and work with professors who are eager to give you one-on-one attention. There are no graduate assistants teaching undergraduates at Fort Lewis College. Our science labs allow you to use instruments that larger universities reserve for graduate students only.
