Sociology/Human Services

Students who graduate with degrees in Sociology say three things about their experience at Fort Lewis College.

First, they more critically understand the world they live and the daily events they read about in the newspaper. Second, they care more deeply about the welfare of others and are more hopeful about their ability to create change.

Finally, students say the large amount of experience gained while studying Sociology has been a significant factor in finding employment or being admitted into graduate school.

If you're considering Sociology, you'll link your academic studies with community experience. You'll graduate with hundreds of hours of practical experience, working closely with community professionals and activists on issues that are closely aligned to your own interests and goals. This experience will give you an advantage in beginning your career or graduate school admissions.

With Sociology, you can take part in the Mexico program. For a trimester, you'll work in a Mexican community and live with a Mexican family. You'll learn Spanish and acquire an in-depth knowledge in the Mexican culture.

Then there are the professors. Small classes are the rule, especially as you enter upper division courses. Your professors will also know you personally, and they'll take an interest in your career goals and your special needs.

Within the Sociology program, there are three areas of concentration:

Human Services -- Emphasizes the process of social change and prepares you to work in areas of human services, community development and grass roots activism.

Criminology -- Designed for students wishing to work within the growing criminal justice field.

Ethnic Studies -- Emphasizes an historical and cultural understanding of ethnic groups in the United States. This will provide a strong background if you are interested in pursuing ethnic studies in graduate school or working with ethnic groups in the community and in human services work.
