Why I Teach at Fort Lewis Slideshow

This three-minute slideshow features commentary from Simon Walls, Assistant Professor of Marketing, about the educational experience in the School of Business Administration.  The images include photos of Dr. Walls in his office and in the classroom in Education-Business Hall, students working in Durango, students on a recent study abroad trip led by Dr. Walls to Costa Rica, and students on an Innovative Month program led by Dr. Walls on the cruise industry.

Here is Simon Walls’ commentary:

"I think the reasons many of us come to Fort Lewis are really simple. They're not complicated. I can speak for myself certainly, when I talk about the really wonderful environment in which we work and live. We have a beautiful facility at the school. It's absolutely a gorgeous campus. The School of Business is in a relatively new building, technology is state-of-the-art, there are wonderful classrooms and those kinds of things."

Strength One: Small Classes

"One of the things that are certainly meaningful for me and the students is the class size. One of our bragging points is that we have such small classrooms. Typically, class will never exceed 30 students.

"As faculty we are better able to get to know the students. There is a lot more one-on-one interaction and we like that. We think it gives the student a better education and we enjoy the personal interaction."

Strength Two: Internships

"Internships are another area of great strength at the School of Business. We're fortunate. What we're able to do is get students out in the practitioner world where they are able to engage their classroom learning and practice the skills and the trade that we share with them in the classroom.

"What we find is that internships are a great way for students to explore the fields. Even though they may have taken classes and studied the course work, once you get out into the real world, it's perhaps a little bit different. Internships give students the opportunity to get out there and see just how interested they are in any given area."

Strength Three: Study abroad opportunities

"It's my impression that it is really inexcusable for any business school or business program, in our day and age, not to offer an international or study abroad program. In the School of Business at Fort Lewis, we are very rich; we're very thick and deep on the bench in terms of opportunities for students. What you see is a vast array of opportunities for students who are interested in getting overseas.

"I sort of combine all these things and I consider myself to be one of the luckiest guys in the world. First to be in the trade or profession that I am as an educator, and secondly to be here at Fort Lewis and being able to practice that trade.
