Answers to questions about Career Services

What assistance does Career Services provide to prospective students?
As a community member, prospective students can receive assistance through the Career Services Office. The types of help available are similar to what current students receive with a few exceptions. Some of the services are at no cost to you, and other services charge a fee.

You can attend our Annual Career Day and use our Career Resource Center at no cost. For a fee, you can schedule an appointment and take a vocational assessment. The assessment results will show your interests, values and skills. We’ll show you how they relate to career options.

Where is Fort Lewis Career Services Office located?
The Career Services office is located in the Miller Student Services Building, Room 230, on the Fort Lewis Campus. The physical address is 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301. You can also reach us at 970-247-7562.

What kinds of events and programs does
Career Services hold each year?

Career Services offers an Annual Career Day and Etiquette Dinner. You’ll visit with employers and learn the ins and outs of formal dining. In Spring, we offer a Teacher Fair. School Districts come to campus to recruit students for teaching positions.

Throughout the school year, we offer current enrolled students seminars on many career topics such as presenting yourself for graduate school interviews, resume writing, the interviewing process, looking for a job, internships and career related experiences.

When should I contact Career Services?
You should contact our office early in your academic studies. We help freshmen set career goals based on their interests. We encourage you to create an academic plan that supports your goals.

Can you help me decide on what to study?
We help registered and admitted students who are undecided about a major. By working with Fort Lewis Academic Explorers program, we can help you select a career direction based on your interests, values and skills. Once we understand your career goals, we can show you what majors are best to study.

What is the Skyhawks Job Source?
The Job Source is an on-line, web-based system. It allows Fort Lewis students to search for positions, post resumes and cover letters for employers to view. It also allows students to apply for positions on-line.

Students who post resumes will be included in candidate searches by employers and by the Career Services Office. Students can keep track of and manage their job search activities as well. It is only available to current Fort Lewis students and alumni.

Can you help me find a job while I am in school?
Yes, once you are enrolled, you can take advantage of the resources we offer to find part-time or full-time positions on campus or in the Durango community. Each semester, about 600 Fort Lewis students work at various jobs on campus.
