How High School Juniors can prepare for college
It is not too early to begin planning for college. Here is a month-to-month pre-college calendar and checklist designed specifically for high school juniors. Simply click on the month below.
Continue to take and seek out challenging classes.
Join an academic club at school to add to your academic resume.
Talk with your guidance counselor about your options and plans.
Sign up for the ACT or SAT prep courses.

Look into financial aid and scholarships. Find out the requirements to earn a scholarship.

Ask your guidance counselor about the PSAT, ACT and/or SAT.
Register online to take the test.
The Fort Lewis code for ACT is 0510 and SAT is 4310.
You can also contact a Fort Lewis Admission Counselor for information about the college.
Begin to research colleges. Look at their academic areas, financial aid and campus life.

Begin putting together a portfolio and resume that highlights your special skills and talents.
Focus on your classes. Fort Lewis requires a 92 index or higher -- a combination of your test score and grade point average -- to be considered for admissions.
With a high index, you may qualify for more scholarships.
Attend a college fair and meet with admisson counselors. Check the Admission Calendar for dates on when we are in your area.

Talk with your parents and high school counselors about colleges that interest you.
Take the PSAT. You should get the results by Christmas.
If you haven't already, sign up for the ACT or SAT prep courses.

Review your PSAT results with your counselor. This will help identify your strengths and determine areas that you may need to improve upon.
If you haven't already, sign up for the ACT and SAT. Remember to prepare. Your score will impact your index score.

Keep up your grades. Fort Lewis looks at a combination of your test score and grade point average.

Research summer programs. Many colleges offer art camps and college prep courses during the summer for high school juniors and seniors.
Revisit your portfolio and resume and add the new projects you are doing in your junior year.

Plan campus visits for Spring Break.
Continue to do your best in your classes. Your GPA is a key factor in college admissions.

Take your ACT and/or SAT test this spring. The earlier you take it, the more time you'll have to review your options.
You will also have time to retake the exam if you would like a higher score.

Attend an open house for high school juniors. Fort Lewis offers one on March 14th.
It's a great way to meet professors and learn about academic majors and minors.

Consider filling in academic gaps during the summer. Enroll in summer classes at a local community college.
You should also line up volunteer work and participate in programs that show your talents and interests.
