Student on campus

Campus Living

Your home away from home

You probably have lots of questions about Fort Lewis College resident halls and housing facilities. Going off to college can be both exciting and challenging. Here are answers to common questions about living on campus.

What are the advantages to living on campus?

  • Students who live in the residence halls at Fort Lewis College get better grades and are more likely to stay in school and graduate. The halls may get loud from time to time, but making the on-campus living environment conducive to academic success is one of our top priorities.
  • All of our residence halls are conveniently located within easy walking distance of the Student Life Center, Campus Union Building, Reed Library, and all academic buildings.
  • Our residence halls are extremely safe. Police Officers and Residence Life Staff are on duty and patrol every night, 7 days a week. Students can call for late night escorts. The outside doors of the halls lock automatically when closed, requiring a key for entry. Students' rooms are individually locked, and it's important for residents to take common-sense precautions and keep their rooms locked, as well as their vehicles.
  • Living on campus is FUN! There is almost always something going on, from informal get-together's to educational and social programs. One or more of the 65 on-campus clubs and organizations meet students' unique interests. Resident Halls also provide students opportunities for leadership. Each hall has a Resident Assistant -- a student who is trained to help other students adjust to on-campus living.

Living and Learning Communities

Fort Lewis College offers Living Learning Communities for students who live on campus. Students live with other students with common interests. The Living Learning Communities offered in Fall 2007 include:

Hungry Mind House -- Activities are geared toward students interested in a variety of intellectual pursuits and the FLC Honors Program.

LIFE House -- Learning to Invest in the Future of the Earth is for students interested in cultural diversity, community service and the environment.

Outdoor Experience Hall -- This LLC is for students interested in participating in a wide variety of outdoor, recreational activities.

Who is required to live in the residence halls?

About one-third of students live on campus in one of seven residence halls or apartment complexes. First-year freshmen are required to live on campus as part of Fort Lewis College's commitment to building a living and learning community. But some students may meet qualifications for an exception.

Does your student need a meal plan?

  • All students who live on campus must purchase a meal plan. Commuting students may also purchase a meal plan or place skyhawk dollars on their ID cards to purchase meals. For more information and meal plan options, or to request special meal accommodations, please see our section on Campus Dining Services.

Our on-campus living amenities have wonderful views of the La Plata Mountains. We offer double rooms with community bathrooms down the hall, three different types of suite-style rooms and three types of apartments. Apartments are reserved for sophomores, juniors and seniors, students with families and transfer students.
