Welcome Veterans

Fort Lewis College recognizes and honors the extraordinary contributions and sacrifices made by the members of the Armed Forces.  We welcome veterans who wish to begin or continue their education at our campus in Durango, Colorado.

 

The College is working to help veterans make the transition from military life back into life as a civilian and a student. A number of resources and programs are available exclusively for veterans, including the Fort Lewis College Veterans Club.


How to Apply - New Freshman
  • It's easy — Apply online or download a printable copy of our application
  • After you've submitted your application, submit an official copy of your high school transcripts to:

  • Submit an official copy of your ACT and/or SAT score report to Fort Lewis, using test codes 0510 and 4310 respectively.
  • Send a $40 application fee.
  • Home school students and students receiving a GED willl need to send an official copy of high school completion records or GED results to the Office of Admission.

    • Provide 2 letters of reference (recommended). Your reference letters should come from teachers, advisors or counselors. Click here for a suggested format (pdf).
    • Write a Personal Essay (recommended). Your double-spaced typed essay should be 250 to 500 words on one of the following questions:
      -- College encourages the exchange of ideas and opinions. What will other students and faculty members learn from you?

      -- Imagine you are ready to retire. Looking back on your life, explain how you made a difference in the world?

  • If you have fewer than 30 hours of college credit completed, you'll need to send us High School transcripts and ACT/SAT scores to the above address.
  • Write a Personal Essay (recommended). Your double-spaced typed essay should be 250 to 500 words on one of the following questions:
    -- College encourages the exchange of ideas and opinions. What will other students and faculty members learn from you?
    -- Describe how you have made a conscious effort to lessen your impact on the environment?
    -- Imagine you are ready to retire. Looking back on your life, explain how you made a difference in the world?

  • Admission Standards -- A grade-point average of 2.4 (cumulative and transferable GPA) from all colleges attended.
    -- It takes about 4-6 weeks once your application is complete to review it and make a decision.

  • Submitting Your Transcipts -- Applicants must submit official copies of their college transcripts to the Fort Lewis College Office of Admission as part of the application process. Be sure to send your most current school’s transcripts as well.

    VA Benefits

     

    New Veteran Students - Complete VA form 22-1990 (Application for Educational Benefits).  This needs to be done as early as possible after you have been accepted by Fort Lewis College, as it takes a minimum of 4-6 weeks to process your claim.

     

    Transfer Veteran Students - Complete VA form 22-1995 (Change of Program or Place of Training) and submit to the Veterans' Certifying Official at the Registrar's Office.

     

    Dependent Students - Complete VA form 22-5490 (Application for Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance).  This needs to be done as early as possible after you have been admitted into Fort Lewis College, as the minimum processing time for claims is 4-6 weeks.  When you receive notification your benefits have been approved, please provide the Veterans' Certifying Official in the Registrar's Office with a copy of the notification letter.  This will provide the VA claim number, which must be used for any correspondence between the Registrar's Office and the VA.

     

    Rehabilitation Students - You will need to contact the Veterans Administration at (800) 827-1000, which will connect you with the proper authority to determine if you qualify for benefits.  Once you have been approved for benefits, you will receive VA form 28-1905 each term of enrollment.  You will then need to submit this form to the Veterans' Certifying Official at the Registrar's Office.

     

    General Information - Address changes with the VA can be made by calling (888) 442-4551.  Please notify the Registrar's Office as well.  Any registration changes should be reported immediately to the Veterans' Certifying Official in the Registrar's Office within 15 business days from the last date of attendance.  Failure to do so may result in an adjustment of reported hours back to the first day of the semester.  You will receive checks on a monthly basis, which will be payment for the preceding month of enrollment.  Chapter 30 students are required to verify their enrollment for the time period and number of hours indicated on the form via WAVE at www.gibill.va.gov in order to be paid.  Chapter 30 students may also phone in this information at (877) 823-2378.

    You may check the status of your Veterans’ benefits by calling (888) 442-4551. This is an automated phone system which allows you to check your status. You may also ask questions via the VA Education Benefits website at www.gibill.va.gov.

     

     

    Native American Tuition Waiver

    Qualified Native American students will be admitted to Fort Lewis College tuition free. They are still responsible for purchasing books, paying college fees, room and board expenses, etc.

     

    For purposes of the tuition waiver, Native American is defined as follows:
    "The term Native American shall include all persons of Native American descent who are members of any recognized Native American tribe now under federal jurisdiction, and all persons who are descendants of such members who were, on June 1, 1934, residing within the present boundaries of any Native American reservation, and shall further include all persons of one-half or more Native American blood. Eskimos and other aboriginal people of Alaska shall be considered Native Americans."

    Fort Lewis College Veterans Club

    The Fort Lewis College Veterans Club exists to give veterans a community of friends that understand what being in the military is all about. Any veteran from any branch of service is welcome to join. The Club routinely holds meetings and sponsors events, such as the visit by author, Sgt. Andrew Brandi.
