Durango is known as the Mountain Bike Capital of the Word. It's no surprise that the Fort Lewis College cycling team is the best in the nation.
The Fort Lewis College cycling program has produced some the nation's top riders. Former Skyhawk cyclist Tom Danielson now rides for Lance Armstrong's Discovery Team. With Armstrong now retired, Danielson is considered one of the heirs to Armstrong's throne. Todd Wells, one of the top mountain bikers in the world, is also an alumnus of the Fort Lewis cycling team.
Iron Horse Classic
Race the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train on Memorial Day weekend. Every year the Iron Horse Classic offers the greatest road race ever.
This spectacular race is through the San Juan Mountains where all the vistas are outstanding. Best of all, you can experience this classic course free from cars. The Colorado State Patrol closes the highway to vehicles, allowing hundreds of road bikers to pedal 48 miles, climb 5,700 feet in altitude and scale two 11,000 foot mountain passes on their way to Silverton.
