Community Based Learning & Research

As a Fort Lewis College student, you’ll apply your knowledge and skills to community projects as part of your classes.

In the past year, students have taken on projects such as:

  • Research grants and community resources for a local school district

  • Produce a video documentary on regional health care issues to create public awareness and discussion.

  • Write brochures to inform the public about purchasing environmentally safe products

  • Build a water distribution system for a rural community in Thailand

  • Work with fifth graders in a dog-house building project, teaching academic and civic lessons.

  • Organize a high school rafting trip to see the impact nature has on student attitudes and behaviors.

  • Your classes will give you opportunities to connect your work in the classroom to real problems in the community. Your professors will encourage you to think about the public value of your academic work.

You can also be involved in campus civic engagement efforts and through service work with a campus or community agency that you care about.

Fort Lewis’ goal is to provide all studentsopportunities to engage in community-based work and graduate with transcripts that record their civic and leadership experiences.
