Southwest Colorado offers downhill and cross-country skiing with lots of snow, sunshine and no crowds. There are ski areas for experts and beginners. Consider some of these different locations.
Durango Mountain Resort -- Located 25 miles north, Durango Mountain Resort (DMR) boasts incredible views of the majestic Needles and La Plata Mountain Ranges. With an average annual snowfall of 260 inches, and over 300 days of sunshine a year, DMR is rated #1 for Winter Weather by the readers of SKI Magazine.
Telluride Ski Resort -- Located 118 miles from Durango, Telluride offers a genuine mountain experience for all levels of skiers. It has a mix of quality terrain at all points on the mountain -- from refined groomed runs to challenging bumps. Even beginners and intermediate skiers can ride to the highest peaks and enjoy terrain and views typically reserved for the experts.
Wolf Creek Ski Resort -- This resort is located 80 miles east of Durango. Wolf Creek is a high alpine ski resort, 10,300 feet at the base and 11,900 feet at the summit. With an average annual snowfall of 465 inches, Wolf Creek offers the most snow in Colorado.
Silverton Mountain Ski Area -- This ski area is a new expert and advanced only ski/snowboard facility, located 50 miles north of Durango. It offers guided skiing all season, but guided-only skiing from January through March. This ski area was ranked #1 in steeps and #1 in powder in the USA by Skiing Magazine (2003/2004) . It was also rated the "Top Extreme Ski Experience" by Rocky Mountain News.
Kendall Mountain Ski Area -- With three runs and one lift, this is a small, family fun ski area with lots of easy runs for beginners located in Silverton. The runs are intermediate and beginner, covered in an annual snowfall of 180 inches.
Hesperus -- This is a small, inexpensive ski area west of Durango. Hesperus features night skiing and snow tubing, both popular with locals.
Skiing is plentiful near Durango. There are slopes for skiers and snowboarders at differnt skill levels.
