The Southwest Writers Institute at Fort Lewis College increases community access and exposure to literature and the craft of writing. It features literary readings, writing workshops and writers' panels.
The Institute also showcases the work of national and regional writers and it puts FLC students and area writers into contact with one another and with professional writers.
The 2005 Southwest Writers Institute, an inaugural event, featured Joy Harjo, Denise Chavez, and Leonard "Red" Bird. It rejuvenated and expanded the popular Durango Literature Series, which ran from 1982-1993 and brought writers such as Maya Angelou, Leslie Marmon Silko and Edward Abbey to Durango.
Fort Lewis College hosted the 2006 Institute, which offered keynote readings by Sherman Alexie, Esther G. Belin, Steven J. Meyers and Willian Pitt Root. It lso offered craft sessions taught by published Four Corners writers.
At the Southwest Writers Institute, students learn from professional writers. The event also increases access to literature and the art of writing.
