TRIO Program for Academic Advancement

Attending college can be the most rewarding and challenging times in your life. The Program for Academic Advancement (PAA), a federally-funded TRIO program, provides help, guidance and support so you can succeed at Fort Lewis College.

PAA provides individual academic and personal support services to eligible students. All PAA services are free. Our services include:

  • individual tutoring in any subject financial aid advice and assistance in completing applications for federal, state, local, and private sources of financial aid
  • guidance in selecting courses and in developing an individualized academic plan
  • peer mentors who offer personal advising, assistance, and support
  • a private computer lab networked to the College system and software for individual tutorials a lending library academic and college survival workshops in math and writing skills, note-taking, dealing with test anxiety, test-taking, budgeting money, time management, using e-mail and the World Wide Web, and all aspects of graduate school preparation
  • personal and career planning
  • field trips to regional graduate schools for juniors and seniors
  • monitored study halls, mid-term "study fests," and finals review sessions
  • a fall picnic, a holiday party, and a spring recognition banquet
  • a variety of cultural programs and activities.

You are eligible to participate in PAA if you are enrolled at Fort Lewis College (or accepted for enrollment), are a U.S. citizen, are working toward your first Bachelor's degree, AND you can answer "YES" to at least one of the following questions (preference is given to those who are eligible for a Pell grant):

  • Neither of your parents (nor your legal guardian) had a Bachelor's degree before you became 18 years old;
  • You applied for financial aid and received a Pell grant;
  • You have a documented disability.

If you answered "YES" to one or more of these questions, you may be eligible and should apply to PAA. Call 970-247-7692 and request that an application be sent to you.

You can begin using program services after PAA accepts you into the program. PAA serves over 200 students each year and new participants are accepted until all available spaces are filled.
